Kurt Wharton, MD Featured on Fox 10 News about Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation

Kurt Wharton, MD was recently interviewed by Fox News about one-week accelerated partial breast irradiation. The HDR brachytherapy treatment discussed is now available at all four ROCA facilities including Banner Thunderbird Medical Center where Dr. Wharton's practice is based. John Kresl, MD, PhD is Awarded Prestigous Fellowship in the American College of Radiation Oncology

John J. Kresl, MD, PhD, FACRO was awarded Fellowship in the American College of Radiation Oncology at the College's Annual Meeting in February for his meritorious service to our specialty and his contributions to radiosurgery research. Dr. Kresl was also recently listed in the 2011-2012 "Best Doctors in America" database and named one of "America's Top Oncologists 2010" by the Consumer's Research Council of America. He is also a Distinguished Fellow of the American College of Cancer Specialists. Congratulations to Dr. Kresl.

Sandra S. Zaky, MD Joins ROCA

Sandra S. Zaky, MDROCA is pleased to announce that Sandra S. Zaky, MD has joined our practice. Dr. Zaky will be based at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn and Banner Desert Medical Center. She received her Bachelor’s of Science in Electrical and Biomedical Engineering at Marquette University, in Milwaukee, WI. She received a Master’s of Science in Immunology at Albany Medical College in Albany, NY. Her thesis focused on a novel treatment for hormone- receptor positive breast cancer. Dr. Zaky went on to receive her medical degree at Albany Medical College in 2005. She completed her residency in Radiation Oncology at Emory University, in Atlanta, GA. She has had extensive training in pediatrics, intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), stereotactic (body and brain) radiotherapy, and brachytherapy. She has been asked to speak at multiple national meetings regarding her research on triple negative breast cancer. Her interests include breast cancer, pediatric oncology, and cancer survivorship programs. Dr. Zaky is board eligible in Therapeutic Radiology by the American Board of Radiology.

 


ROCA & Banner Good Samaritan named "SAVI Center of Excellence" for One-Week Partial Breast Radiation

SAVI Centers of ExcellenceROCA's Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center is one of three radiation oncology facilities in the Southwest region to be designated a SAVI Center of Excellence by Cianna Medical. The Center of Excellence designation recognizes our dedication to education, training and experience in 5-day, short course, partial breast radiation for early breast cancer, otherwise known as APBI. To qualify the physicians, medical physicists and clinical staff at Banner Good Samaritan were required to complete a comprehensive training and education program to demonstrate proficiency in delivering radiation therapy with SAVI. The facilities have also expressed a commitment to patient education, advocacy and awareness of advanced breast cancer treatments.

 


Kurt A. Wharton, MD Joins ROCA

Kurt A. Wharton, MDROCA is pleased to announce that Kurt A. Wharton, MD has joined our practice. Dr. Wharton will be based at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center and the Virginia Piper Cancer Center at Scottsdale Healthcare-Shea. He received his medical degree from the College of Human Medicine at Michigan State Univeristy in 2005. He completed advanced training in Radiation Oncology at the University of Arizona Cancer Center where he served as the Chief Resident. He also received special training in prostate seed implants at the world-renonwned Seattle Prostate Institute. He has published papers in the medical literature about the treatment of a breast cancer, prostate cancer, and stereotactic radiation therapy for spine tumors. Dr. Wharton is Board Eligible in Therapeutic Radiology by the American Board of Radiology.

Top DocsThree ROCA physicians were named 2010 Top Docs by PHOENIX Magazine. Once again ROCA had more Top Docs than any other radiation oncology practice in the Valley. The awards were given based on the results of a survery of 5000 Valley physicians who were asked to nominate the best radiation oncologists in the city. The 2010 Top Docs list was published in the April edition of PHOENIX Magazine.

Top DocsThree ROCA physicians, Luci Chen, MD, Lauren Stegman, MD, PhD, and Irene Taw, MD, were named in the 2009 Doctor Guide in Phoenix Woman Magazine. ROCA doctors made up nearly three-quarters of the listed Radiation Oncologists. The guide was published in the September edition of Phoenix Woman Magazine.

 


Novalis TX™ Radiosurgery at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center featured on Fox 10 News

Mr. Stead came to ROCA physicians at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center when he was told that there were no good treatment options for the tumor that regrew at the bottom of his skull a short time after aggressive chemotherapy and standard radiation. He received a course of stereotactic radiosurgery and rapidly regained partial sight in his left eye without any significant short-term complications. John Kresl, MD, PhD to be keynote speakerROCA physican, Dr. John Kresl will be giving a keynote address at the Varian™ Users Meeting later this month in Chicago, IL. This event will be attended by cancer physicians from around the world. Dr. Kresl will discuss the clinical advances in RapidArc® and Novalis TX™ radiosurgery that he and his ROCA collegues, Thomas Daniels, MD and Lauren Stegman, MD, PhD, have introduced at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center.

 


Thomas Daniels, MD interviewed on Fox10 News about double mastectomies

ROCA physican, Dr. Thomas Daniels, was interviewed on Fox10 news by Diane Ryan about the increasing number of double mastectomies for breast cancer performed in the US. A recent publication in the Journal of Clinical Oncology found that rate preventative removal of the opposite breast from the one affected by cancer more than doubled over the past five years. Breast cancer specialists, including ROCA Radiation Oncologists, are available to help women with breast cancer decide on the optimal treatment for their disease at the Laura-Dreier Breast Center at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center. John Kresl, MD, PhD Publishes Papers on High-Dose Radiation for Glioblastoma and Radiosurgery for Pituitary Adenomas

ROCA physician John Kresl, MD, PhD co-authored two publications appearing in clinical journals earlier this year. In February, he contributed to a report in the journal Neurosurgery describing the results of radiosurgery for pituitary adenomas. In March, he contributed to a report on the outcomes of the latest Radiation Oncology Therapy Group dose-escalation trial for glioblastoma multiforme printed in the International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, Physics. Dr. Kresl practices at ROCA's Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center site.
